How do I transfer my CNA credential to Alabama?
Compare the reviewed application routes to see which one fits your situation. An out-of-state credential alone does not establish eligibility.
What does CNA reciprocity mean?
States use the terms reciprocity, endorsement and transfer to describe how they review nurse aide credentials from another state. Each state defines its own process, so use the term your new state uses. Approval is not automatic. The destination state decides whether your training, testing, work history and registry status meet its rules.
A nurse aide registry is an official state list used to check nurse aide status. A competency evaluation is the state-approved nurse aide exam. Its format varies by state. This guide explains the published instructions, but the agency decides whether you qualify.
How do you become a CNA in Alabama?
Alabama-approved nurse aide training must be at least 75 clock hours, including at least 16 hours of supervised clinical training and 16 hours of lab training. You get at least 16 hours of training before you have any direct contact with residents.
- Pass both the written/oral and skills competency tests. The registry allows three attempts within 24 months of training; otherwise the applicant must retrain.
- ADPH lists approved certification test providers in its training guide; Prometric publishes the current Alabama candidate bulletin and regional test-site process.

Which pathway applies to you?
Employer requests registry placement

Who sends registry verification?
Employers can print registry verification; Alabama does not maintain CNA employment history. Confirm whether the agency requires a special outgoing verification form.[1]
What exceptions apply?
No additional exception is listed in the reviewed sources.
What else should you know?
Active status requires at least eight hours of paid qualifying direct care every 24 months; volunteer work does not count.[1]
