What to check with the state

A CNA credential is issued under state law. A training-hour total, testing provider, renewal cycle or transfer form that applies in one state may not apply in another. Before you enroll or apply, confirm these four items with the state that will issue or review your credential.

  • Training approval: Is the exact program and location currently approved?
  • Competency evaluation (state CNA exam): Which provider, handbook and passing standard apply?
  • Registry status: Is your current credential active and in good standing?
  • Transfer route: Does the destination state use reciprocity, endorsement, examination or retraining for your situation?
