What does CNA reciprocity mean?

States use the terms reciprocity, endorsement and transfer to describe how they review nurse aide credentials from another state. Each state defines its own process, so use the term your new state uses. Approval is not automatic. The destination state decides whether your training, testing, work history and registry status meet its rules.

A nurse aide registry is an official state list used to check nurse aide status. A competency evaluation is the state-approved nurse aide exam. Its format varies by state. This guide explains the published instructions, but the agency decides whether you qualify.

How do you become a CNA in Connecticut?

Connecticut-approved training has a 100-hour minimum, including 16 hours of core instruction before patient contact.

  • Route 1 requires a Connecticut-approved program and Prometric written and practical examinations for registry listing.
  • Examination must be passed within 24 months after training; DPH states no limit on attempts within that period.

What if you previously held a nurse aide credential in Connecticut?

If qualifying work started before expiry but was not reported, employment verification may permit renewal. Without relevant work for more than 24 months, retake written and practical exams.[3]

Who sends registry verification?

The renewal page links the Connecticut Nurse Aide verification site for checking registration status. Confirm whether the other state needs a separate verification form.[3]

What exceptions apply?

No additional exception is listed in the reviewed sources.

What else should you know?

For renewal the aide completes their section and the employer completes and returns employment verification; renewal has no fee.[3]

What fees does the state publish?

The reviewed source does not publish an amount for the following items: Route 7 fee, Testing fee. Confirm the current charge with the agency before paying.

What should you confirm with the agency?

  • Confirm the Route 7 supporting documents and fee with the contractor or agency.
  • An expired out-of-state credential is not guaranteed to qualify under Route 7; confirm with the agency.

The state decides eligibility and approval. This guide does not grant a credential.

What will the Connecticut planner ask?
