How do I transfer my CNA credential to Maine?
Route to review: Application for an out-of-state trained CNA. Check all the conditions for this route. An out-of-state credential alone does not establish eligibility.
What does CNA reciprocity mean?
States use the terms reciprocity, endorsement and transfer to describe how they review nurse aide credentials from another state. Each state defines its own process, so use the term your new state uses. Approval is not automatic. The destination state decides whether your training, testing, work history and registry status meet its rules.
A nurse aide registry is an official state list used to check nurse aide status. A competency evaluation is the state-approved nurse aide exam. Its format varies by state. This guide explains the published instructions, but the agency decides whether you qualify.
How do you become a CNA in Maine?
Maine requires an approved CNA training program of at least 130 hours.
- Maine requires satisfactory completion of the approved CNA training program and the Maine CNA competency test before registry placement.
- Registry applicants submit the completed application, training documentation, competency-test documentation, certificate of training and the criminal-background check secured during the course.

Which pathway applies to you?
Application for an out-of-state trained CNA
CNA trained outside Maine
- List all states where CNA certification has been held and have current active good-standing status in at least one other state.[2]
- Include government photo ID, signed/dated application and verification of every current or former state certification; name must match ID.[1] [2]
- Maine reviews out-of-state training equivalency; provide official training documentation. Missing documentation leads to Maine-approved training and testing.[2]
Use Maine’s CNA application
Use the linked online CNA application, or the current PDF and required evidence by email, fax or mail.[1]
Official route: Online, email, fax or mail via agency hub. [1] Open agency instructions ↗
What if you previously held a nurse aide credential in Maine?
The CNA application also covers a Maine registrant inactive for more than two years; do not presume incoming reciprocity replaces reactivation review.[1]
Who sends registry verification?
Incoming applicants must include verification of all current and former state certifications. Confirm the accepted format and who sends it. For a transfer from Maine, contact the destination registry; it may require a reciprocity form confirming Maine status.[1] [2]
What exceptions apply?
No documentation of out-of-state training
Agency FAQ directs Maine-approved training and competency testing.[2]
Disqualifying criminal history or substantiated finding
These may prevent registry listing; active out-of-state status alone is not a guarantee.[2]
What else should you know?
To remain active, the FAQ requires eight qualified employment hours every 24 months, no disqualifying annotations and renewal every 24 months.[2]
For Maine renewal, the employer completes the employment-verification form and the CNA submits it with renewal.[1]
What fees does the state publish?
| Item | What the source says |
|---|---|
| Application for an out-of-state trained CNA: Registry listing | No applicant listing fee per agency FAQ.[2] |
What should you confirm with the agency?
- The current hub links May 2026 application PDFs. Confirm the required attachment format and who must send verification.
- The current hub says returning registrants inactive more than two years use the CNA application. Confirm shorter inactivity periods with the Registry.
- Equivalency and non-traditional evaluation are case-specific. Do not treat the 130-hour Maine program as a blanket interstate rule.
The state decides eligibility and approval. This guide does not grant a credential.
What will the Maine planner ask?
- Which pathway applies to you? (Application for an out-of-state trained CNA)
- Have you previously held CNA certification in Maine? (Yes, No, I’m not sure)
