How do I transfer my CNA credential to New Mexico?
Review the agency instructions and the details that still need confirmation before choosing a pathway.
What does CNA reciprocity mean?
States use the terms reciprocity, endorsement and transfer to describe how they review nurse aide credentials from another state. Each state defines its own process, so use the term your new state uses. Approval is not automatic. The destination state decides whether your training, testing, work history and registry status meet its rules.
A nurse aide registry is an official state list used to check nurse aide status. A competency evaluation is the state-approved nurse aide exam. Its format varies by state. This guide explains the published instructions, but the agency decides whether you qualify.
How do you become a CNA in New Mexico?
The current handbook identifies NMHCA-approved D&S Headmaster testing and scoring services.
- The handbook requires training, passing knowledge and skills examination components, and meeting state/federal registry requirements. It uses New Mexico TMU for exam/registry management.
- The handbook directs approved-training-program questions to the NMHCA Nurse Aide Registry.

Which pathway applies to you?
Out-of-state reciprocity
Current, good-standing CNA on another state registry
- You must be current and in good standing on a nurse aide registry in another state. New Mexico reviews the application and decides whether to place you on the New Mexico registry.[1] [3]
Apply through New Mexico TMU
Create a TMU account and choose the Reciprocity Form application. HCA and the current handbook direct all reciprocity applications to TMU.[1] [3]
Provide the requested documents
The HCA page lists government photo ID, Social Security card and current out-of-state certification. Follow the TMU application for the current upload list.[1]
Check the registry decision
HCA reviews the application and decides whether to add you to the New Mexico registry. Submission does not itself establish eligibility.[3]

What if you previously held a nurse aide credential in New Mexico?
An existing lapsed New Mexico certification follows reinstatement, not new interstate reciprocity. Under 24 months: request exam reactivation from Headmaster. Longer lapses depend on work history; HCA reviews.[3]
Who sends registry verification?
Incoming verification sender and exact uploads are not listed in the public reciprocity section. Follow the current TMU form; outgoing verification instructions are separate.[3]
What exceptions apply?
New Mexico credential lapsed over 24 months without nursing-related work in the preceding 24 months
The handbook requires an approved New Mexico training program and competency examination.[3]
What else should you know?
The HCA page says Prometric no longer manages the New Mexico registry; all applications use TMU. Confirm the current route with HCA.[1] [2] [3]
What fees does the state publish?
| Item | What the source says |
|---|---|
| Out-of-state reciprocity: Reciprocity application | $0; HCA states there is no fee to request reciprocity.[1] |
What should you confirm with the agency?
- Confirm the current TMU upload list and who must send verification with HCA.
- The handbook’s reinstatement wording requires nursing-related work “for at least 24 months.” Confirm eligibility for your situation with HCA.
- HCA requires 12 hours of in-service or continuing education each year, but it doesn't explain how to prove those hours or whether employer training counts. Ask HCA or your employer before you renew.
The state decides eligibility and approval. This guide does not grant a credential.
What will the New Mexico planner ask?
- Which pathway applies to you? (Out-of-state reciprocity)
- Have you previously held CNA certification in New Mexico? (Yes, No, I’m not sure)
