What does CNA reciprocity mean?

States use the terms reciprocity, endorsement and transfer to describe how they review nurse aide credentials from another state. Each state defines its own process, so use the term your new state uses. Approval is not automatic. The destination state decides whether your training, testing, work history and registry status meet its rules.

A nurse aide registry is an official state list used to check nurse aide status. A competency evaluation is the state-approved nurse aide exam. Its format varies by state. This guide explains the published instructions, but the agency decides whether you qualify.

How do you become a CNA in Oklahoma?

Oklahoma-approved nurse aide training must include at least 75 hours of training, at least 16 classroom hours before supervised practical training and at least 16 hours of supervised practical training.

  • Candidates must pass the state-approved competency examination; OSDH maintains the Nurse Aide Registry and the approved-program/CEP list.
  • The OSDH-approved program list includes long-term-care and competency-examination providers; confirm the provider type before enrolling.

Long Term Care reciprocity review

Out-of-state long-term-care aide

  • Under §310:677-11-1(b), OSDH may approve an applicant listed on another state registry as a certified long-term-care aide without abuse, neglect, mistreatment or misappropriation notation.[5]
  • Report every state ever certified in, certification numbers and expiry dates, and requested adverse findings/conviction evidence.[2]

Oklahoma CNA retest review

Existing aide lacking required work evidence or with specified expired status

  • The rule allows a retest if the certification expired more than two years but less than three years, or if the required eight hours of work evidence is missing during the certification period or up to 24 months after expiration. Retraining is required if the certification has been expired for three years or longer, or if the retest is failed.[5] [3]
  • The current ODH 841 says three years or longer expired requires retraining, but its preceding retest sentence also includes exactly three years; obtain registry guidance at that boundary.[3]

Official route: Send ODH 841 to OSDH; await approval letter. [3] Open agency instructions ↗

What if you previously held a nurse aide credential in Oklahoma?

Use renewal/retest for an existing Oklahoma record. Renewal requests eight paid nursing-related hours during the 24-month certification period.[4]

Who sends registry verification?

Form 735 authorizes disclosure from state registries; the checked sources do not specify who sends incoming verification or how Oklahoma handles destination forms.[2]

What exceptions apply?

No additional exception is listed in the reviewed sources.

What else should you know?

The incoming LTC reciprocity rule does not itself prescribe a separate training-hour or paid-work threshold. It permits agency approval rather than guaranteeing acceptance.[5]

Renewal is every two years and requires an attestation of eight compensated nursing/health-related hours in the preceding 24 months; OSDH may request evidence.[5]

What fees does the state publish?
