What does CNA reciprocity mean?

States use the terms reciprocity, endorsement and transfer to describe how they review nurse aide credentials from another state. Each state defines its own process, so use the term your new state uses. Approval is not automatic. The destination state decides whether your training, testing, work history and registry status meet its rules.

A nurse aide registry is an official state list used to check nurse aide status. A competency evaluation is the state-approved nurse aide exam. Its format varies by state. This guide explains the published instructions, but the agency decides whether you qualify.

How do you become a CNA in Vermont?

Vermont issues Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) licenses; OPR licenses applicants while DAIL/DLP approves training programs.

  • An approved NATCEP requires at least 75 clock hours: 59 curriculum instruction and 16 supervised practical training with a live person.
  • DLP links Excel Testing Vermont for nurse-aide testing; OPR’s current application instructions require authorization for NNAAP written and skills examinations.

Which pathway applies to you?

Standard LNA endorsement

Applicants licensed or certified in another jurisdiction

  • Other-jurisdiction standards must be substantially equivalent. Submit original and most-recent state verifications when different.[2]
  • Document 400 hours during the preceding two years through an appropriate employer/job description; rules allow work reinforcing LNA skills.[3]
  1. Apply online

Select LNA endorsement in OPR Online Services.[1]

    Read the official instructions ↗

  2. Complete background check

Follow the emailed fingerprint authorization instructions and upload the required receipt.[2]

Fast Track endorsement

Applicants with at least three preceding years of qualifying active licensure/certification

  • Current verification must establish continuous good-standing licensure for the preceding three years. The rules describe full-time licensed practice.[2] [3]
  1. Choose the appropriate endorsement route

Apply online; request agency review if the fast-track criteria do not clearly fit your record.[1] [2]

What if you previously held a nurse aide credential in Vermont?

Use Vermont renewal/reinstatement for an existing Vermont license. Rule 4-10 imposes additional reinstatement review after more than two years, including a federal background check.[3]

Who sends registry verification?

Standard endorsement requires verification submitted from the original and most-recent licensing states when different; fast track requires current-state verification showing three continuous years.[2]

What exceptions apply?

Seeking provisional practice while verification/background results are pending

A provisional license requires a separate request and receipt evidence; it is not automatic permission to work.[2]

What else should you know?

Vermont licenses nursing assistants as LNAs. RN/LPN fees and compact rules should not be applied to this route.[1] [4]

What fees does the state publish?

Published fee details. This is not a total cost.

  • Fast Track references active licensure in the instructions and full-time licensed practice in rule 4-1; individual qualification remains an OPR determination.

The state decides eligibility and approval. This guide does not grant a credential.
